Zawadi Mudibo is a business news reporter and anchor at KTN, having joined at the beginning of 2010. Having been previously employed as a business reporter at NTV, he started his career at Hope FM Radio where he had a short stint as current affairs programme producer. His primary interest, and the area where he feels his most memorable stories have come from, is entrepreneurial business features.
Zawadi’s ambition is to become an authority in the field of business journalism and make the move into the international media. With Kenyan journalists who have made an impact on the international press few and far between, it is his aspiration to break the mould. With this in mind, his role model in business journalism is Richard Quest of CNN, though in terms of broader journalism he is also an admirer of Piers Morgan.
He believes that business journalism has great potential to drive the economy of Kenya, but only of the reporter does a good job of informing the public of the important facts. He feels his role is to inform people and help them make good business decisions. To be a good business reporter takes a lot of research and analysis, and so a good network of contacts is crucial.
According to Zawadi, the specialism has grown from being a “mere avenue” for “boring” financial reports to being a real-time venture looking at issues that have an impact of Kenya’s economy. Electronic media has assisted with this progress. He believes this is the way forward, along with explaining the relevance of developments in business to the man on the street.
