Cosmas Butunyi is a writer for The East African. Besides venture capital, he has also been writing on agriculture and science since 2007. He is currently studying at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa as the 2011 FitzGerald Prize fellow.
Cosmas won in the Best Finance Feature category in the 2011 Diageo Business Reporting Awards with a special report on CEO’s pay jointly written with colleagues from The East African. He pinpoints this as his most memorable story, given the award he received and the response the story generated from readers.
To him, business journalism is crucial since it is about livelihoods in today’s capitalist society. Therefore, excellence in business journalism is about simplifying issues and making them not only accessible but also relevant to the lay people.
He believes that the practice of business journalism in Kenya is on the right track, though there is still more to be done, such as devoting more space and airtime to business news as well as simplifying the stories in order to make them more easily understandable.
